Thomas A. “Buck” Riley, Jr.
Thomas A. “Buck” Riley, Jr., the Chairman and CEO of Riley Riper Hollin & Colagreco, is a distinguished commercial litigaton attorney. Buck, who founded the law firm in 1984, is based in Exton where he leads its Litigation Practice. Over the course of his more than 40 year legal career, he has built a reputation throughout southeastern Pennsylvania as a “go to” lawyer for defendants and plaintiffs in complex cases. He also serves as local litigation co-counsel for clients of both national and international law firms.
Buck represents a diverse group of clients – ranging from some of the country’s largest developers to the horse racing industry – in general complex commercial as well as land use litigation. His many successes in local, state and federal courts have helped clients achieve their goals and have helped establish important legal precedents. In the land use field alone, clients have received approval for millions of square feet of office and commercial space, thousands of residential units and many mixed-use development projects.
Among Buck’s landmark victories include a successful Supreme Court tax appeal for a world renowned non-profit foundation; an $18.5 million verdict – the highest ever awarded in Chester County – on behalf of a client in a lease dispute with one of the nation’s largest grocery chains; and the first verdict in excess of $1 million in Chester County on behalf of an entertainment venue in its challenge of an amusement tax.
Whether negotiating a settlement on behalf of a client or representing them at trial, Buck’s success stems from his commitment to detail and thorough preparation. Whether working on cases as diverse as a lender’s liability dispute, trade secret matter or a complex case involving racehorse artificial insemination issues, Buck comes to the table armed with the understanding of his client’s industry and a deep knowledge of the law.
Buck received his Juris Doctor from Villanova University School of Law and his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from St. Joseph’s University. Active in multiple professional and civic organizations throughout the region, he is a life member and former chairman of Villanova Law School’s Board of Consultors and a former chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. He also served on corporate and association boards of directors and for 10 years was general counsel to the Chester County Republican Committee. Buck is a licensed pilot who enjoys flying fixed-wing planes and helicopters and stunt flying (aerobatics).
